Deformation
Deformations are very relevant in the design of structural systems.
From the first design approaches, in a very intuitive attempt of understanding, they show and teach us about how to understand the function of structural systems: once one understands how a structure deforms, one will understand their structural performance. Natural structures perform and reproduce themselves with deformation. These processes are very interesting to investigate and to understand.
Butterflies spread their wings in order to gather energy. Pine trees spread their seeds in order to reproduce.
How can we gather these informations in order to develop our built environment into breathing skins? We can simulate these deformations – be it under load or due to temperature effects – and develop structural systems and building skins for the architecture of the future.
